Welcome to the West Hill Primary School web site!

Latest site updates:

The 2008-2009 Academic Year was another great year of learning for us, in which we built even further on the previous year’s successes.  It was an extremely busy and very happy year which finished on a high note with a stunning performance of ‘Rats! The Musical!’ by Years 2 to 6, excellent Key Stage 1  and 2 SATS results and the creation of our beautiful Mediterranean Garden at the entrance to the school.  Outdoor learning was a key feature of the year with the children creating colourful outdoor murals and two ‘minibeast hotels’ from recycled materials, both of which added to the wealth of learning activities already taking place in our grounds.  In addition, both children and staff worked very hard during the year on ‘problem-solving’ activities across the curriculum.  A much needed extension to our staffroom, built during the Summer Holidays, provided a lovely welcome back for our hard working staff at the start of the 2009-2010 Academic Year. In June 2009, we were delighted to maintain our Investors in People status for the third time, and to receive the Investors in People Bronze Award.

We had a very successful 2007-2008 Academic Year, building on our 'outstanding' June 2007 Ofsted Inspection. During the year, we achieved the Eco-Schools Silver Award and were very proud to achieve our first Eco-Schools Green Flag. We were awarded the DCSF Activemark and Sportsmark, The Football Association Chartermark and a second Devon County Council Travelwise Platinum Award for our work in road safety and school travel. We also achieved the Financial Management Standard in Schools (FMSiS). We reached the South West Regional Finals of the National Teaching Awards, receiving a 'commendation' for our Sustainable Schools work. Our National Curriculum SATs results in 2008 were outstanding, with 97% of our Year 6 children achieving level 4+, of which 70% achieved Level 5 in both English and Maths, and 100% achieved level 4+ in Science, of which 83% achieved Level 5. Excellent results were also achieved across the school. All the children work very hard to do their very best in all areas of learning. We are very proud of them all.

We had a very successful 2006-2007 Academic Year. In June 2007, we were judged to be ‘outstanding’ in all areas by Ofsted. We achieved the ‘Artsmark Gold’ Award for our commitment to the teaching of The Arts: Music, Art, Dance and Drama. In addition, we achieved the Eco Schools Bronze Award for our environmental work and the Devon County Council Travelwise Platinum Award for initiatives within our School Travel Plan. We were one of 30 schools across the country who created the Chris Beardshaw Educational Garden which was awarded the prestigious ‘Tudor Rose Best in Show’ at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. We aim to build on our successes during the current Academic Year.

In November 2005, the Sunday Times published its top 500 schools in the country. West Hill Primary School was ranked at number 7 in the country, due to its results in the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests, for 2002, 2003 and 2004.

In September 2005, our school was the first in the country to be awarded the 'Healthy Schools Award' under the new award criteria. We were judged to be either 'good' or 'outstanding' in all of the 62 required standards.

In June 2006, we maintained our Investors in People Standard, with excellence, following the three-yearly review. In July 2006, we were awarded the Travelwise Gold Award for our School Travel Plan. This award followed on successfully from the Silver and Bronze Awards of the two previous years.

We are very proud of these achievements, but we are never complacent. We have a culture of doing our best in all areas of learning and school life, and we shall continue to strive for excellence in all that we do.

West Hill Primary School moved into their present school building during the Christmas vacation 1991/1992.

The original school was built in 1876.

There are 210 children at the school, arranged in seven classes. Members of teaching staff are: Mrs Watson, who teaches Reception Class, Miss Kemp who teaches Year 1, Mrs Hudson, our Deputy Headteacher, who teaches Year 2, Miss Spence who teaches Year 3, Mrs Bedford and Mrs Western who teach Year 4, Mr Shammas who teaches Year 5 and Mrs Tovey who teaches Year 6.
