About our school
‘Learning Today for the World of Tomorrow’
West Hill Primary School is a happy, secure, friendly and welcoming school, with a true family atmosphere, in which all staff and pupils are positive, caring and optimistic – and they smile! The staff, governors and pupils alike enjoy what they do and do it very well. Our school community has high expectations, both in terms of achievement and behaviour, and everyone is expected to do their best and to use their special gifts and talents, at their own particular level. At West Hill Primary School, all members of the school family and the contributions they make to the school are greatly valued. Courtesy and politeness is expected at all times, and people are always acknowledged and thanked for what they do. ‘Care’, ‘tolerance’, ‘trust’ and ‘respect’ are very important to us. Our ethos is also based on our SMILE Learning Trust Co-operative Values of: self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, solidarity and, as Co-operative members, we believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
Our Headteacher’s vision and goal is to achieve:
“Excellence in teaching and learning, achieved through an enjoyable and professional whole community team effort following clearly defined goals, which recognises and values the uniqueness and achievement of every child, and respects the dignity of all.”
Our June 2007 Ofsted Inspection states: ‘West Hill Primary is an outstanding school. Pupils achieve exceptionally well and attain high standards in many areas of the curriculum. Their personal development is outstanding. Parents are extremely happy with the care and education provided and are very supportive of the school. One parent summed up the views of many with the comment, ‘I am delighted that my children attend this successful school’.
Outstanding leadership and management is a key factor contributing to the school’s success. The headteacher provides excellent leadership and educational direction. She is extremely well supported by senior staff and subject leaders who all make a valuable contribution to the school’s high performance. The school has an accurate view of how well it is doing and has taken highly effective action to bring about improvements where necessary. An extremely positive atmosphere pervades the school and there is a clear commitment from staff to maintaining high standards and providing a high quality education for all pupils.’
This was echoed in our previous Ofsted Report in January 2002, which states that the inspectors ‘came away with a very clear picture of a happy, friendly, hard-working community, whose ethos contributes significantly to the high standards achieved and prepares pupils well to become responsible citizens within society.’
‘The ethos is warm, welcoming, friendly and caring which was very apparent not just from all interview discussions but the ambience on entering the School and from being on site for a day.’ June 2009 Investors In People Assessment Report
‘I have been impressed with the drive and commitment of the whole staff team to continually improve and provide exceptional education to pupils in an environment that is supportive, secure and conducive to learning. The whole team at West Hill are proud
to be Outstanding and share a desire to maintain this status.’ June 2012 Investors In People Assessment Report. Quotes from 2 members of staff from the report:
‘I’ve never worked in a school like this. It’s a lovely place to work.’
‘There’s not a day I don’t love to come to school.’
We are an outstanding team and we are all very proud of our school.
